Symposium dinner at the Archbishop’s Palace

From the courtyard of the Archbishop's Palace, Nidaros Cathedral in the background. The symposium dinner was held at the Archbishop’s Palace. The reception was hosted by the Mayor of Trondheim. Together with Nidaros Cathedral, the Archbishop's Palace holds a unique position in the history of Norway. From the mid-1100s the palace was a spiritual and political centre. The Archbishop's Palace was the centre of the Norwegian archdiocese, which comprised not only Norway but also the Faeroes, Shetland, Isle of Man, Iceland, and Greenland.

After the Reformation at the beginning of the 16th century, the palace entered a new phase, becoming the residence of the King's Lord Lieutenants north of Dovre, and later a major military depot. Over the centuries the buildings have been plundered and burnt, but they have always been restored. The last restoration was in the 1990s, when two burnt depot buildings were replaced by a new building.

From the Symposium DinnerToday the Archbishop's Palace has become a major museum complex, the place to visit if you want to see and experience important parts of Trondheim's and Norway's history. The new museum, which opened in 1997 and is the site for the Symposium's reception, is at the south end, while the north wing, dating from the 1160s, features the great hall where the archbishop received his visitors and where he had his private quarters. The symposium dinner will be held in the great hall. Temporary exhibitions are held in Lavetthuset, while visitors can learn about the Norwegian armed forces from ancient times up to 1945 in the Army Museum/Resistance museum. In the summer months visitors flock to the courtyard, and during the annual Saint Olav's Festival it hosts a historical marketplace, theatre performances and concerts.

The Coastal Express (Hurtigruten) Trondheim – Bergen

After the symposium, a sea journey was organized to see the spectacular Norwegian coastline and fjords onboard one of the luxurious cruise ships that are in regular daily traffic along the coast. The symposium organizers and the Norwegian Ministry of Finance joined in the tour and the discussions from the symposium continued in an informal and social setting.

General information
M/S Richard WithThe Coastal Express (Hurtigruten) is served by a new and modern fleet of ships traveling from Kirkenes in the North to Bergen in the south. We sailed part of this magnificent route from Trondheim to Bergen on the ship M/S Richard With.

The ship has large, comfortable lounges providing good views, wonderful cabins and suites of a high standard, fully licensed restaurants, cafés and bars, and souvenir shops that also sell a selection of toiletries. M/S Richard With even has outdoor jacuzzies.

All Hurtigruten ships place great emphasis on artistic decoration, and have a multitude of oil paintings, water-colours, prints and sculptures that have resulted in the ships being descibed as floating art galleries. Many of the artists come from places along the route of the world’s most beautiful voyage, and even more have allowed themselves to be inspired by the fantastic Norwegian coastal scenery.

From Trondheim to Bergen
Participants from the symposium onboard the Coastal ExpressWe left Trondheim on Saturday and sailed past the island of Munkholmen, then out of the fjord and south-west alongside the beautiful island of Hitra and the open sea of Hustadvika before approaching Molde with the beautiful Romsdal Alps on the starboard side. We then continued our trip past the magnificent West Norway scenery with mouths of fjords and a lush, beautiful archipelago, including the island kingdom of Øygarden, before the ship turned east and began the approach to Bergen.
